The BioArray Solutions platform combines semiconductor technology, microparticle chemistry and molecular biology to provide a unique format for multiplex DNA, protein or cellular assays. As blood typing reagents become more costly and limited in availability, this integrated Human Erythrocyte Antigen (HEA) Bead Chip™ system allows for large-scale DNA analysis in a microarray as a substitute for conventional blood group typing.

Chronic red cell transfusion has proven to be an effective therapy in reducing the risk of recurrent strokes in patients with hemoglobinopathies, hematologic malignancies, organ transplant recipients and patients with renal failure. One risk of chronic transfusion is alloimmunization. The provision of antigen-negative blood forms the basis for safe blood transfusion by minimizing the risk of adverse transfusion reactions. The Bead Chip™ System allows rapid genotyping of 20+ antigens for the same cost as currently incurred for phenotyping three antigens in most laboratories.

Today's medicine is heading toward phenotyping by way of DNA analysis - much like what we've seen for organ transplants, we can also do today for blood matching.
